Digital Skills for creating: How to organise a community event
Course Title: Your voice: create the Idea Store Learning student newsletter Part 1 & 2 (Level 1 - 2)
Brief course description:
This creative, project-based course supports you in developing your digital and communication skills by contributing to the production of a real newsletter for the Idea Store Learning community. You will write articles, take photos, design layouts, and use digital tools to create and publish content.
The course builds confidence in teamwork, digital literacy, and work-related skills such as planning, editing, using feedback, and meeting deadlines. You will be introduced to tools like Canva, and Microsoft Word, as well as simple AI and ESOL support tools. The newsletter may also involve collecting feedback or stories from other learners, developing community involvement and real-life communication.
Objectives:
- Plan and write short articles or learner stories for a newsletter.
- Edit and format written work using Microsoft Word or Canva.
- Use templates in Canva to create digital page layouts with text and images.
- Take and select appropriate photos for print or online use.
- Work collaboratively with others to agree on content and layout.
- Give and respond to constructive feedback in a group.
- Use AI tools to help with writing ideas, checking grammar or improving structure.
- Use ESOL tools such as translation apps and online dictionaries to support writing and editing.
- Use email or online forms to collect information or quotes from learners or tutors.
- Plan, organise and meet a real deadline for a community-facing project.
Entry requirements:
You should be working towards Entry 3 or above in English or ESOL. You should feel comfortable typing short texts and working with others. This course is ideal for current Idea Store Learning learners who want to build confidence and creativity through a real-world project.

What examination is there:
There is no examination for this course. You will agree learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.
How will I know I am making progress:
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which of your digital skills you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.
