Functional Skills Maths Level 2

Course Title: A2710 & A6837 - Functional Skills Maths Level 2

Brief course description:

Ready to sharpen your maths skills and tackle real-world challenges with confidence? This dynamic 8-week course is designed to prepare you for the Pearson Edexcel Level 2 Functional Skills Maths exam, while equipping you with practical tools for everyday life, work, and further education.

Across three weekly sessions, you’ll dive into the world of numbers learning how to calculate with large values, evaluate expressions, and substitute into formulae. You’ll explore how to read, write, order, and compare positive and negative numbers of any size (yes, even figuring out which fridge shelf is coldest!). You’ll master fractions, decimals, and percentages, including how to calculate percentage changes and perform arithmetic operations with precision.

From budgeting your weekly shop to interpreting data at work, this course helps you apply maths in meaningful ways. You’ll build confidence in solving problems, making decisions, and communicating solutions clearly.

By the end of the course, you’ll be exam-ready and empowered to take your next step—whether that’s college, university, a new career, or simply navigating life with sharper skills and a smarter mindset.

Objectives:

  1. Calculate and manage financial tasks using positive and negative numbers, large values, and decimals. Apply estimation and the order of operations to create and adjust household budgets, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in everyday money management.
  2. Evaluate and compare financial options by calculating interest rates, percentage changes, and discounts. Use fractions, decimals, and percentages to make informed decisions about savings, investments, and spending in real-life scenarios.
  1. Interpret and analyse numerical data presented in various forms, including fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals. Identify trends and patterns to compare product performance, assess efficiency, and support decision-making using data.
  1. Apply mathematical techniques to solve measurement and geometry problems. Calculate area, perimeter, and volume of 2-D and 3-D shapes, convert between metric and imperial units, and use scales and coordinates to plan layouts and renovations.
  1. Represent and compare data using tables, charts, and diagrams. Calculate statistical measures such as mean, mode, and range, and use scatter diagrams to identify and interpret correlations between variables in practical contexts.
  1. Calculate and express probabilities in multiple formats fractions, decimals, and percentages. Use probability to assess risk, predict outcomes, and make decisions in games, finance, and everyday situations involving uncertainty

Entry requirements:

You will need to have completed a Level 1 qualification or be able to demonstrate the skills and language at the required level. You should have a basic understanding of Maths operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), familiarity with fractions, decimals, and percentages, and an interest in applying mathematical skills to real-life situations.

Equipment required:

Please bring to every lesson:

  • A folder
  • Pens & pencils
  • Lined A4 paper
  • A smartphone (if you have one)
  • A reusable water bottle

We will give you the WIFI details in the first lesson.

If you do not have access to a smart phone or a computer, speak to your tutor.

You will also need a personal Gmail account to access the Google classroom, which will be used for submitting coursework and accessing course materials. If you do not have a Gmail account speak to your tutor.

What courses can I go on to:

There are other courses you can do after or at the same time as this course:

  • Getting ready for Functional Skills Maths Level 1 / 2
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 1/2
  • Becoming confident with numbers - mental maths/ shapes and measurements
  • Maths for Work and Life Level 1&2 Part 2
  • Digital Skills Entry 3/Level 1
  • Digital Skills in the workplace: Using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Please ask your teacher for more information or contact Functional Skills email: functionalskills@towerhamlets.gov.uk

What examination is there:

You will undertake the Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills Qualification in Maths at Level 2.

There are four components that you must pass to gain the qualification.

Working with numbers - Basic arithmetic skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It also focuses on understanding and working with fractions, decimals, and percentages, and applying these skills in real-life contexts like budgeting, estimating, and rounding.

Measure, Shape and Space - Apply measurements in various contexts, such as cooking or construction, and how to calculate area, perimeter, and volume. Additionally, focus on recognising and working with shapes and spatial relationships.

Handling Data - Collect, organise, and interpret data from charts, graphs, and tables, while using averages, ranges, and other basic statistical measures. You'll learn to apply this data to solve problems, such as comparing prices or analysing local and national trends.

Problem Solving - Use mathematical reasoning to tackle everyday problems. You'll apply these skills to real-world scenarios, like planning a journey to work, school or a holidays and managing finances.

The exam is taken at The Shadwell Centre at the end of the course. You MUST attend all your classes.

How will I know I am making progress:

At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your Maths you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.

You will lose your place if your attendance is less than 80%.
