Brief course description:

Would you like to boost your confidence, sharpen your English skills, and get ready to tackle a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification all in just 10 weeks?

This twice-a-week course is your chance to level up your reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities in a fun, practical way.

You’ll explore real-world texts like articles, reports, and instructions, and learn how to write with clarity and purpose whether it’s a formal letter, a persuasive email, or a professional report. You’ll also get hands on with punctuation, technical vocabulary, and literary devices that make your writing pop.

Plus, you’ll practise presenting your ideas, joining discussions, and responding confidently to others. By the end, you’ll feel ready to take on the qualification and move forward whether that’s into work, college, university, or simply communicating with ease in everyday life.

Objectives:

  1. Deliver formal presentations and participate in group discussions by listening, explaining, and supporting your views with persuasive evidence.
  1. Identify, summarise, and compare key ideas and language features across different texts.
  1. Plan, write, and structure content for various audiences using clear language and varied formats like reports, articles, and letters.
  1. Proofread, correct, and refine your writing by applying grammar rules, accurate sentence structures, and proper paragraphing.
  1. Create, edit, and submit digital documents using online platforms and tools, while studying independently through digital resources.
  1. Set, pursue, and achieve meaningful goals aligned with your career, education, or personal aspirations.

Entry requirements:

If you are not fluent in English, you need to hold a level 1 qualification in Reading & Writing for ESOL, or have higher level speaking, reading & writing skills.

You should be working towards achieving a level 2 qualification in Functional Skills English. You should be able to give presentations, read newspaper articles in English, write formal emails for work and/or other services.

Please note, this is not an ESOL course. If you are still learning the English language and need to develop and practice your language skills such as using correct verb tenses when speaking or writing, improving your spelling, understanding detail and gist in long explanations, and expressing yourself in an additional language, please join one of the ESOL classes that we offer.

  • A folder
  • Pens & pencil
  • Lined A4 paper
  • A smartphone (if you have one)

We will give you the WIFI details in the first lesson.

If you do not have access to a smart phone or a computer, speak to your tutor.

You will also need a personal Gmail account to access the Google classroom, which will be used for submitting coursework and accessing course materials. If you do not have a Gmail account speak to your tutor.

What examination is there:

There is no examination for this course. You will agree individual learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.

How will I know I am making progress:

At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your English you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.

You will lose your place if your attendance is less than 80%.
