Brief course description:
This is part of a 9-week ESOL Entry 2 Reading Exam Course.
This course will help you improve your reading skills for everyday life, work, and study. You will practise reading short, simple texts such as school letters, GP appointment notices, bus timetables, workplace safety signs, and leaflets from your local council. You will learn how to find important information quickly, understand the purpose of a text, and follow short instructions.
The course will also prepare you for the Ascentis Entry 2 Reading Exam, giving you the skills and confidence to read different types of text, answer comprehension questions, and recognise key features of written English.
Objectives:
- Read and understand short everyday texts such as school letters, GP appointment notices, bus timetables, and shop signs, identifying the main points and purpose.
- Find and understand key details in texts and images, such as prices on menus, dates in appointment cards, or instructions on labels and leaflets.
- Recognise the purpose and meaning of different texts by looking at headings, keywords, and layout, for example knowing if a text is giving instructions, advertising something, or providing information.
- Read and follow short instructions in everyday situations, such as directions to a local place, instructions for using a household item, or safety signs at work.
- Use alphabetical order to find information in lists, timetables, and directories, such as sorting names in a contact list or looking up items in a catalogue.
Entry requirements:
This is an Entry 2 ESOL class so your English will be at Entry1 level. You already have some vocabulary so you can talk about daily topics using the present simple or present continuous to describe objects and people and can ask and answer simple questions in these tenses. You now want to increase your vocabulary, become more confident in using different tenses and use language more accurately.
Equipment required:
Please bring to every lesson:
- A folder
- Pens & pencils
- Lined A4 paper

In the reading exam you will identify key text features and answer comprehension questions.
The exam tasks are an important part of your course. They will be spread out over the course, so you MUST come to all your classes.
How will I know I am making progress:
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your English you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class.
Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.
