Brief course description:
This is an 18-week ESOL Entry 2 Speaking and Listening Exam Course.
You will learn to use English more confidently in everyday situations. You will practice speaking on the phone, making appointments, talking to doctors, and interacting with teachers and friends. You’ll also work on conversations with neighbours and learn useful vocabulary and grammar, including how to use the present perfect tense to talk about your feelings and experiences.
By the end of the course, you will be more comfortable and confident in your speaking and listening skills. You’ll be able to join in discussions, give short presentations, and understand information from talks. You will communicate your thoughts and feelings clearly, making it easier to understand daily conversations. You will also be well-prepared to achieve your Entry 2 exam.
Objectives:
- Listen for important information in short talks, instructions or announcements. For example, you will be able to understand the time and date of an appointment or hear key points in a short presentation. You will show you understand by answering questions.
- Join in a discussion for example discussing a class trip. You will practise taking turns, asking for more information if you don’t understand, and answering other people’s questions.
- Ask and answer questions to give and get information in everyday situations, for example at the GP surgery, in a shop, or at the job centre.
- Give a short talk on a familiar topic, like your favourite place, a recent celebration, or your hobby. You will practise planning what to say and speaking clearly.
- Use polite and appropriate language for different situations. For example, you will learn how to make polite requests, offer to help, agree or disagree politely in a conversation.
- Share your opinions and preferences and explain your reasons. For example, you could say which food you like best and why, or which place you think is better to visit.
- Make and agree plans for future activities using the correct grammar for future tense. For example, you might arrange a meeting, book an appointment, or plan a class event.
- Follow and give short instructions so that others understand clearly. For example, explaining how to complete a form or how to get to a location.
- Speak clearly so others can understand you. You will practise stressing the most important words in a sentence and listening for stressed words when other people speak.
- Use correct grammar when speaking, including present, past, and future tenses. For example, you will be able to talk about your daily routine, describe what you did last weekend, and explain your plans for next week.
Entry requirements:
This is an Entry 2 ESOL class so your English will be at elementary level. What examination is there:
You will undertake the Ascentis Entry 2 Speaking and Listening exam in your classroom with your teacher and sometimes other learners on the course.
There are three main tasks:
Task 1: Listening
The listening part of the speaking and listening exam is assessed through recorded listening tasks. You will listen to two recordings and answer questions based on gist, detail and response to instructions. Written responses are required for the listening tasks.
Task 2: Role Play
You will participate in a role play with the assessor who is your teacher.
Task 3: Presentation and Discussion
You will give a presentation in a small group. You will be given the topic up to two weeks before the assessment so that you can think about the topic and vocabulary needed. You will listen to each other and ask questions in a short discussion after each presentation.
The exam tasks are an important part of your course. They will be spread out over the course, so you MUST come to all your classes
How will I know I am making progress:
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your English you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class.
Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.
Other info:
If you miss 3 lessons in a row without telling your teacher, or if you miss 4 lessons in total, you will lose your place on the course. It is important to come to every lesson so you can make good progress.
This course will help you improve your English so you can do well in work, study, and everyday life. You will also learn useful skills that employers want, such as:
- Communication skills – how to speak and write clearly
- Decision-making – how to make good choices
- Teamwork – how to work well with other people
By building these skills, you will have a better chance of finding a job, moving forward in your career, and taking part in your community with confidence.
