Brief course description: 

This is an 18-week course designed to help you improve your English and develop the skills you need for work. You will practise speaking, listening, reading, and writing in work-related situations.

 

You will learn how to:

  • Search and apply for jobs
  • Communicate clearly with managers, co-workers, and customers
  • Work well in a team
  • Understand your rights and responsibilities at work

We will work on real-life tasks such as completing application forms, preparing for interviews, writing workplace emails, taking phone messages, and reading job adverts. You will also build your vocabulary for different types of jobs and workplace situations.

By the end of this course, you will feel more confident using English at work and in everyday life, and you will have developed useful skills to help you apply for jobs or continue your studies.

 

Objectives:

  1. Communicate clearly at work – Take part in short conversations with managers, co-workers, and customers, using polite language, asking questions, and responding appropriately.
  2. Understand and follow workplace instructions – Listen to short instructions from a manager or colleague and repeat them back or follow them to complete a task correctly.
  3. Explore job opportunities – Read and understand job adverts, match your skills to job requirements, and identify the steps needed to apply.
  4. Complete job application forms – Fill in paper or online application forms accurately with personal information, skills, and experience.
  5. Prepare for job interviews – Practice answering common interview questions and giving examples of your skills and experience.
  6. Understand rights and responsibilities at work – Learn about equality, discrimination, health and safety, and basic employment laws in the UK.
  7. Work effectively in a team – Take turns, share ideas, and agree on decisions in a group activity or discussion.
  8. Build workplace vocabulary – Learn and use common words and phrases for different types of jobs, tools, equipment, and workplace situations.
  9. Write simple workplace communications – Write short emails, notes, or messages to give information or request help.
  10. Build confidence and self-esteem – Talk about your strengths and achievements, set personal goals, and reflect on your progress throughout the course.

Entry requirements:

 

This is an Entry 3 ESOL class for adults aged 19 and over. You can already talk about everyday topics, read simple texts, and write short messages, but you want to improve your English for work and build confidence in speaking, reading, writing, and listening. 

You will need to complete a pre-course assessment to check your level. 

Equipment required: 

Please bring:

  • A folder
  • Pens & pencils
  • Lined A4 paper
  • A smartphone (if you have one)
  • A reusable water bottle

We will give you the WIFI details in the first lesson.

What examination is there: 

The awarding body for this portfolio-based qualification is Ascentis.

You will complete a portfolio of work with your teacher under the following 4 categories:

  1. Building confidence and self-esteem
  2. Effective communication for work
  3. Exploring job opportunities
  4. Your rights and responsibilities at work 

How will I know I am making progress: 

At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about what you need to work on and help you set goals.

You will have a tutorial meeting during the course to talk about what you are doing well and what you need to practice more. You will keep a folder with your work, and your tutor will give you feedback in class and on your homework.

To make good progress, you need to come to all your classes and do some learning at home too.

You will lose your place if you miss 3 classes in a row without telling your teacher or if you miss 4 classes in total.

This course helps you get ready for work or further study. It also helps you take part in your community and be an active citizen.


In this class, you will learn skills that employers want, such as:

  • Communication Skills: How to talk and write clearly.
  • Decision-Making: How to make good choices.
  • Working Together: How to work well with others.

 

These skills will help you in many areas of life.
