Brief course description:
This is a year-long course divided into four 9-week parts. You can join at the start of any part.
This course helps you improve your English for everyday life, work, and the community. You will develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills so you can feel more confident using English at home, in public places, and at work.
You will practise having short conversations, asking for help, writing emails, reading signs, and filling in forms. You will also learn important grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills that are useful in real-life situations like going shopping, visiting the doctor, using transport, or applying for a job.
Course Objectives:
- Take part in short conversations about daily life, including making and changing appointments, asking for help, and giving information.
- Ask and answer questions using wh- and yes/no question forms in different situations, such as work, travel or shopping.
- Write simple emails, letters and notes, including requests, reminders, and short messages to friends, teachers or services.
- Read and understand everyday texts, such as signs, notices, appointment letters, school forms, and leaflets.
- Describe people, places, and things using simple adjectives and compare them using words like bigger, cheaper, or more comfortable.
- Complete simple forms with your personal information, including online forms and documents used in work or study.
- Use basic punctuation and spelling correctly in your writing, including capital letters, full stops and question marks.
- Listen for key details in short conversations, announcements or voicemails and understand important information like dates, times, and instructions.
- Talk and write about your daily life, including your routine, your past experiences and your plans for the future, using basic tenses.
- Use English to build life and work skills, such as customer service language, teamwork, time management and polite behaviour in public or professional settings.
Entry requirements:
This course is for adults over 19 who already know some basic English, around Entry 1 level. You should be able to ask and answer simple questions and write short sentences. Before joining, you will complete a short assessment to check your level. You should be motivated to improve your English for daily life, work, and community participation.
You will need to do a pre-course assessment.

Please bring:
- A folder
- Pens & pencils
- Lined A4 paper
- A smartphone (if you have one)
- A reusable water bottle
We will give you the WIFI details in the first lesson.

What examination is there:
There is no examination for this course. You will agree individual learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.
How will I know I am making progress:
There is no exam for this course. You will work with your tutor to set learning goals and keep a folder of your work. You will get regular feedback in class and have a tutorial to talk about your strengths and what you want to improve.
To get a certificate, you must attend at least 80% of your classes and complete your learning plan. If your attendance is low, you may lose your place.

This course helps you become more confident using English in daily life and prepares you for work or further study. You will also improve key life and work skills such as:
- Speaking and writing clearly
- Making decisions and solving problems
- Working in a team
- Managing your time
- Providing good customer service
These skills will help you get a job, do better at work, and take part in your community.
