Brief course description:

This Entry 3 ESOL course helps you develop stronger skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing for everyday life, learning, and work. You will practise more detailed conversations, improve your writing for different purposes, and learn how to understand longer texts and recordings. The course supports your communication in the workplace, in your local community, and in formal settings like healthcare, education, and employment.

Course Objectives:

  1. Take part in everyday and work-related conversations, including asking and answering questions, giving advice, making complaints, and expressing opinions using a range of tenses.
  2. Write clearly and for different purposes, including personal and formal emails and letters. You will learn how to organise your ideas, use linking words, and check punctuation.
  3. Listen for main ideas and details in real-life situations such as announcements, job interviews, GP appointments, and workplace conversations.
  4. Read and understand different types of texts, including job adverts, instructions, school letters, health leaflets, and information from services like the job centre.
  5. Fill in more complex forms, both on paper and online, including job applications, training forms, and workplace documents.
  6. Use spelling, grammar, and punctuation accurately to complete short writing tasks. You will practise spelling every day and job-related words and using full stops, commas, capital letters, and apostrophes correctly.
  7. Use English to talk and write about everyday life, including travel, health, family routines, and community events. You will describe and compare people, places, and jobs using adjectives and comparatives.
  8. Understand job adverts and prepare for work, including identifying skills and hours in job descriptions and practising how to write a simple CV or personal statement.
  9. Communicate confidently in job-related situations, such as interviews, team meetings, or speaking with customers and colleagues. You will also practise how to report a problem or follow instructions.
  10. Understand your rights and responsibilities at work, including topics like working hours, health and safety, and taking breaks — using clear and appropriate workplace language.
