Brief course description:
This is a year-long course divided up into four 9-week parts. You can join any part over the year.
This course is designed to help you become a more confident and fluent speaker and listener in English. You will take part in practical, real-life speaking activities and conversations to help you communicate better in everyday situations.
You will practise speaking in different contexts such as on the phone, at the doctor’s, at school meetings, in shops, and with friends or neighbours. You will also improve your listening skills so you can understand spoken English in conversations, announcements, and short talks. The course includes useful grammar and vocabulary, including more complex structures like the present perfect tense, to help you talk about your opinions, past experiences, and future plans.
By the end of the course, you will be more confident speaking and listening in English at home, in your community, and in the workplace. You will be able to take part in group discussions, give short presentations, and express your ideas more clearly and accurately.
Objectives:
- Speak clearly and confidently using full sentences to talk about your plans, share ideas, and give information in everyday situations.
- Understand and use more complex sentence structures, such as explaining why you missed an appointment or what happened at an event.
- Describe and compare people, places, or things using detail, for example when talking about your local area, a celebration, or different products.
- Ask and answer different types of questions, including open and closed questions, to find out or share information.
- Give and receive information clearly in conversations with doctors, teachers, neighbours or when attending appointments.
- Make plans and arrangements using appropriate phrases, such as organising a trip, booking an appointment, or arranging to meet someone.
- Express opinions, likes, and dislikes, and make suggestions using modal verbs and useful phrases (e.g. I think we should... or I’d prefer to...).
- Give clear instructions or make polite requests, such as explaining a task, asking for help, or giving directions.
- Talk about the past and future using the correct grammar and vocabulary to describe past experiences and future plans.
- Improve listening and response skills by practising active listening and responding appropriately in conversations, group discussions, or presentations.
