To Join: How can you join?

Brief course description:

This is a year-long course, split into four 9-week parts. You can join at the start of any part during the year.

Do you find speaking easier than writing? Is writing your most difficult skill in English? This course will help you improve your writing so you can communicate more clearly and confidently.

You will learn how to:

  • Plan and organise your writing into clear paragraphs
  • Use punctuation correctly
  • Improve spelling and grammar
  • Follow common writing rules, such as capital letters and symbols (&, @, £)

We will practise writing for everyday life, such as filling in forms, sending emails, writing letters, and describing personal experiences. You will also learn language that will help in formal situations, such as work meetings, job applications, and simple presentations.

By the end of the course, you will be able to write more clearly and accurately for different purposes. You will have more confidence with spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and be able to use different tenses and sentence structures to share your ideas in writing.

Objectives:

  1. Plan and organise different types of writing – Practise writing emails, letters, and short reports. For example, draft an email to a landlord using clear sentences to explain a repair problem and request action.
  2. Complete forms correctly – Fill in personal details on forms such as a medical appointment form, using the correct tense for current and past information.
  3. Learn from model texts – Study sample letters and emails to understand their structure, then write your own, such as a complaint letter to a service provider.
  4. Write about personal information and experiences – Describe your local area, your home country, or your hobbies using adjectives and detailed sentences.
  5. Write accounts of past events – Tell a story about something that happened to you, using the past simple and past continuous to show when events happened and what you were doing at the time.
  6. Start and end writing effectively – Practise good openings for letters and emails, such as job applications, and strong closings for formal and informal writing.
  7. Write clear paragraphs – Make sure each paragraph has a main idea and supporting details, for example when writing about a place you have visited.
  8. Use different sentence types – Practise writing simple, compound, and complex sentences to express your ideas more clearly.
  9. Use time markers and correct tenses – Write about events using words such as “first”, “next”, “last week” or “in the future” to show when things happen.
  10. Proofread and choose the right words – Check your work for mistakes and select formal or informal language depending on the situation.
