Brief course description:
This is a 9-week, ESOL Level 1 Writing exam course.
Want to improve your writing to apply for jobs, write reports or continue your studies?
This course will help you develop the skills you need to communicate clearly and accurately in writing for work, study, and everyday life. You will learn how to plan and organise your writing, use correct grammar and punctuation, and write for different audiences and purposes. You will practise producing a range of text types, such as workplace emails, job applications, reports, formal letters, and online posts.
The course also includes digital skills. You will practise typing documents, completing online forms, and sending professional emails. You will learn to recognise common features of online texts, use digital tools to check and improve your writing, and apply safe and professional online communication practices.
By the end of the course, you will be able to produce clear, well-structured, and accurate written texts for both formal and informal situations. You will be confident in applying your writing skills in the workplace, in further study, and in your personal life.
Objectives:
- Write for different audiences and purposes – produce both formal and informal texts, such as workplace emails, letters, job applications, and personal messages, using the correct tone and style.
- Plan, organise, and structure written work – use paragraphs, headings, and bullet points to present information clearly in reports, complaint letters, and summaries.
- Use accurate grammar, punctuation, and spelling – write with correct sentence structure, verb tense consistency, and correct use of full stops, commas, apostrophes, and question marks.
- Complete forms and respond to written prompts – accurately provide personal or factual information for applications, registrations, and workplace documents.
- Use digital platforms for writing tasks – type documents, complete online forms, and send professional emails, using tools to proofread and improve your work.

What examination is there:
You will take the Ascentis Level 1 Writing exam in your classroom with your teacher.
The exam has 3 tasks:
Task 1: Complete a form accurately with personal and factual information (for example, a job application or online registration form).
Task 2: Write an informal text (such as an email or letter to a friend) showing you can use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling in everyday communication.
Task 3: Write a formal text (such as a letter of complaint, workplace email, or short report) using appropriate tone, layout, and structure.
The exam is an important part of your course, so you MUST come to all your classes.
How will I know I am making progress:
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your writing you need to improve and help you create an individual learning plan. You will have a tutorial meeting during the course to discuss your strengths, areas for development, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work to review your progress, and your tutor will give you regular feedback on classwork and homework.
To make good progress, you must attend all your classes and complete work outside of class. If you miss 3 lessons in a row without telling your teacher or 4 lessons in total, you will lose your place on the course.
